2012 National Police Award for Traffic Safety and the Road Safety Lifetime Achievement Award

May 14, 2012 | News, Older

OTTAWA – The National Police Award for Traffic Safety and the Transport Canada Director General’s Road Safety Lifetime Achievement Award have been joint initiatives of Transport Canada, the Canada Safety Council, and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) since 1991. The awards were created to recognize outstanding achievements made by Canada’s police community in the promotion of road safety. In doing so, we are raising the profile of traffic policing as a police career.

The 2012 National Police Award for Traffic Safety was awarded to Constable Michael Janes, RCMP Traffic Services from Marystown, Newfoundland, for his submission of Reduction of Fatal/Non-fatal Collisions. His strategy involved a combination of organized checkpoints, conducted a wide-array of enforcement activities, educated the public and created an awareness of traffic safety issues through a variety of mediums such as CBC radio and other forms of print media.

The recipient of the 2012 Transport Canada Director General’s Road Safety Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Inspector Stanley McNeil of the RCMP National Traffic Services, St. John’s, Newfoundland. Inspector McNeil’s major accomplishments include developing and managing the implementation of the Traffic Services Management Information Tool (TSMIT) to enhance the ability to analyze crash data and to address the leading causal factors of fatal and serious injury traffic crashes.

He represented Traffic Services interests on the National Vehicle Equipment Committee to address issues related to the standard police car concept for the RCMP and implemented an enhanced conspicuity package for RCMP marked police cars to enhance visibility and officer safety.  He promoted service delivery aligned to RSV 2010 and during this time, 8 of 10 participating Divisions reported a decline in the number of fatal and serious injury traffic crashes.

The awards were presented at the Innovation in Road Safety:  Driven to Distraction Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia on Monday, May 14, 2012.
