Home Alone Program

The Home Alone Program is designed to provide children 10 years of age and older with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time. It will help them understand how to prevent problems, handle real-life situations, and keep them safe and constructively occupied.

Please note that some instructors are offering the Home Alone Program via virtual classroom during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Check with your local organization to see if they are offering the course in this medium.

The program focuses on small group discussions, problem solving, role-playing, and instructor-led demonstrations.

The Home Alone Program is offered by School Boards, Child Care Centres, City Recreation Departments, Native Bands, Community Safety Councils, Canadian Forces Bases, Student Employment Centres and Community Lighthouse Programs. Please visit our map to find a course near you.

The course material covers such topics as:

  • House Key is your responsibility
  • Strangers
  • Telephone
  • Emergencies
  • Basic First Aid
  • Internet Safety

The Student Reference Book is designed to allow the program participants to actively participate in class assignments. It provides a review of the program material, as well as additional information that will be of value to the students.
